I bought my 27 inch iMac October 3rd 2014 from the Apple Store about 5 miles away. I set it up on my desk and never saw a chip until recently. It is on the left side about 2/3 way up image shows the edge. It seems to be spreading. Has there been other reports of separation of plastic ? Any idea of what is going on?

None that I have heard of, chances are it either came from the factory that way and it went unnoticed or someone or something caused the damage while it was in your possession. You can book a Genius appointment and see if Apple will take care of it, however the decision is theirs alone.
