Time Capsule Slow File Transfer

Airport Time Capsule 802.11AC

Version 7.7.3

I'm running ethernet from my Time Capsule to a Macbook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) and when I try and transfer a file from the Time Capsule to my MBP I either get a beach ball or the transfer is very slow. It'll take several minutes for a 1MB PDF file. Sometimes it works greatly and then sometime it locks up our system.

I have tested this with router mode set to Off (Bridge Mode) to eliminate any issues with internet and the same issues happen

Are you running the latest Yosemite?

Was it running ok beforehand?

It does seem that yosemite on older computers can have some bad effects.. particularly if you upgrade installed.

I will have to continue to assume Yosemite is involved..

Make sure the ethernet is linking at full speed gigabit.

Just open the network preferences and check.. under advanced.. hardware and make sure it says 1000mbps. Or 1000baseT.

You can also open the network utility. Check on the info tab.

Make sure wireless is off as this confuses things. Even if you have the right network order it still can be confusing.

And make sure ipv6 is set to link-local only. This tends to affect detection rather than speed but it does have odd effects.

Yes, I'm running Yosemite 10.10.3

Yes, it has been running fairly well. Sometimes there was a lag on file structure loading, but this data transfer speed issue is a new problem.
I'm connecting at 1000base T in Network Preferences and in Network Utility it says 1 Gbit/s.

Wireless is OFF.

Configure IPv6: Was set to automatically, I've changed it to "Link-local only"

My current tests are the same which are:
15 seconds to load Time Capsule Files

30 seconds of beach ball after trying to Copy & Paste a 2MB PDF
After the 30 seconds of beach ball, it disappears and it goes to the copying screen. 2 minutes later the file copies

Ok.. life is starting to get complicated.

You need to narrow down the source of the issue. For that you need to run a series of tests.

Plan each test carefully to eliminate some aspect of the setup that could interfere with the transfer.

So..

Test 1.

Turn off ethernet and turn on wireless on the laptop. Have another try at copying the file.

Test 2.

Test the TC with another computer.. I presume if you had another computer you would already have tried this. If you tried and it failed.. and you do have another computer on the network.. copy a file between the two computers. Do this with ethernet and then wireless. You can even do it by direct ethernet but that is seldom necessary.

Test 3.

Plug a suitably formatted disk into the USB on the TC.. it needs only a USB memory stick if you like.. and attempt a file copy.

Test 4.

Download from internet. Is file speed also very slow over the internet?? Download a large file and what kind of speed do you get?

If you are stuck with lack of available equipment.. do a full reset of the TC.. and follow this guideline.. it might not help but it at least eliminates the TC setup going wrong.

Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

Setup the TC again.

Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.

1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 for basestation and and TCwifi wireless name.

If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2.

2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.

3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.

Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking.

4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.

5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.

In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,

Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).

You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.

However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.

6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. Do the same for ethernet if you use it.

There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.

You might need to do some more work on the computer itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.

Tell us how you go.

Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.

Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore

Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.

Yosemite has serious DNS bug in the networking application.. here is the lets say more arcane method of fixing it by doing a network transplant from mavericks.

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/

After that perhaps do a hardware test of the Mac..

Reset PRAM and SMC.. to make sure all that is possible is running correctly..

Tell me how all that goes ..

How does installing another OS on the laptop sound.. maybe to a USB drive??

Slow network or file copy over network.. I would be hunting in the Yosemite section..

There is plenty of issues with Yosemite that cause file speed issues.

Many seem to have been introduced rather than fixed at the latest update.

It could be a hard disk problem with the TC rather than a networking issue.

I have two TCs. Using Black Magic I get a 14MB/s read rate with one and 49mB/s with the other. I did the speed check because a new Time Machine backup (500Gb) was going to take many hours on the "slow" TC (the "slow" TC is directly connect to the iMac by ethernet and the second TC is extended from the slow one so it is not the network causing the problem).

Now my problem is whether I can, or need to, repair the hard disk on the TC. There don't seem to be any Apple utilities to do this. Apparently the TC does a disk check when it restarts but this may not be sufficient to fixed the problem.

Exactly which models are you two TC?

A1xxx from the base please.

And which size hard disk is in them.. sometimes Apple did a swap around of brands of hard disk that was less than successful.

Now my problem is whether I can, or need to, repair the hard disk on the TC.

The best "repair" is to do a one pass erase from the airport utility.

This is a low level format and will take several hours depending on the disk size.

If there are bad sectors they should be marked and added to the don't use table in the hard disk.. a particularly poor disk will trigger the SMART and the airport utility will then give you a hard disk error.. SMART is pretty good now in picking up how many errors are happening and when it exceeds the total set for a reasonable drive.. will give SMART failure.. and the disk basically should be replaced.

The OP in this thread is using an AC model TC.. and I doubt the errors will be that high.. hard disk failure has not been an issue AFAIK with the AC model TC.

Test 1: Takes almost 2 minutes to transfer 1MB PDF
Test 2 : Tested with another computer to/from TC and I get the beach ball for a while. Then I have to force quit finder. I retry to transfer and same slow speed results. MBP to iMAC via Dropbox is instant.
Test 3 : USB plugged into TC to my MBP transferring 1MB is instant (Both ethernet and over Wifi). USB plugged into TC to TC transferring 1MB is instant.

Test 4: Speed test via http://www.speedtest.net/ is 9MB. 200MB took 3 minutes to download.

After resetting the TC I'm getting a blinking amber light with the notification of "This Airport basestation has a private IP address on its Ethernet WAN port. It is connected to a device or network that is using Network Address Translation (NAT) to provide private IP addresses. Change your AirPort base station from using DHCP and NAT to bridge mode." My setup is a Zhone modem (from my ISP) to the TC.

Am I wanting the TC to handle the addressing of the IPs or the modem ?

Even with this error I'm able to still use internet and access the files on the TC.

Your test to the USB drive plugged into the TC pretty well says it all.

Test 3 : USB plugged into TC to my MBP transferring 1MB is instant (Both ethernet and over Wifi). USB plugged into TC to TC transferring 1MB is instant.

Although I do not understand the last bit. TC cannot transfer files direct to the USB drive.. it is always via the computer.. so perhaps spell that one out.

It seems that TC disk may indeed be the problem.

Is there stuff on it you need?? If not just do an erase.. one pass..

ie.

User uploaded file

Zero out data.. is one pass.. it will take several hours and of course totally wipe the drive..

If it is still slow after that I would take it back to apple for refund as faulty.

Apr 30, 2015 10:06 PM in response to EvanCourtney

No, you cannot.. Open the disk tab and try an archive.. it might work better than copying to the computer.. but if it is super slow.. then you may need to be creative.. pull the disk from the TC and plug it into a holder.. so far AC model has not needed such drastic treatment..

Is yours an old one??

Some are coming up to near 2years now.. I would be interested to know if they do start having disk issues.

May 3, 2015 10:23 PM in response to LaPastenague

After 6 hours of "Zero out data" the Time Capsule HD seems to be healthy. Black Magic reports read & write speeds around 40MB/s which is more almost 3 times the previous rate so thank you for the tip.

Now I will restore some of the files and start a fresh Time Machine backup for my main Mac. That could take a few hours!

There is a reasonable description of the current TC hard disk at ifixit but I dont want to get there at this stage.
