Mail Stuck Checking Since iOS 8.3

Ever since I updated both iPhone 6 and iPad Air to iOS 8.3 - the Mail app gets stuck "checking mail" several times a day. Often up to a dozen times in a single day. I have waited and waited and it never completes checking. The only thing that will fix it is to force quit the Mail app and launch again. This is using a gMail account that has been configured and working properly for several years. No changes have been made to the account or settings on the devices.

Does anyone have any solutions how to fix this problem?
