Sometimes a lens cleaning will restore functionality.

Use a DVD lens cleaning disk.

If available, a few shots of compressed air in the slot will work.

Use a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth) wrapped around a business card and carefully insert it into the slot.

If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.
