Cloud storage

A few months back I purchased additional cloud storage as I take a lot of photos on my iPhone for work, so I was always running out of storage with my 5GB my phone initially came with. Even though everything appears set up as my Apple ID, I still run out of space. Is there something I am meant to trigger that tells my phone to store these images in the cloud with the 20 GB I am now paying for each month?
