Macbook Pro running really slow

Hi, so my Issue is the following. From one day to another my macbook pro started running really slow, to the point that it would take several minutes to perform any action such as open finder. What I discovered is that it was indexing but would never stop. After reading some suggestions I updated my OS. I did a clean install (deleting everything since I have my important files backed up on a usb) from Lion to MountainLion and from MountainLion to Yosemite. It worked fine for a couple of hours (even while indexing) and then really slow again. Now it has stopped indexing but the problem persists. Please assist.

If this started happening without your having made any changes and without a warning of low disk space, then it's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

So i did all the steps again that dominic recommended. I had already performed all of them except SMC. At first glance the macbook seemed to go faster and then it slowed down. I checked and its indexing again.

Regarding Linc Davis reply. It did start happening out of nowhere, but the issue was always with indexing in the beginning. After digging this past week, 1 of the options is that my SATA cable is defective or my HDD. So yes, it may be the hardware. I already got an appointment for apple store. Ill wait until it finishes indexing and then I will send an update.

Thanks both for your prompt replies.
