not enough HD space for new photos library?

When I open the new photos app and try to import my old Aperture library into it, it tells me that I do not have enough HD space to do so. The old library is kept on and external drive with tons of space. I have tried creating a new main library but when i go to import the old aperture library to it, it just asks if I want to switch my libraries. help.
