Video freezes when Macbook is connected to HDMI

Hi,

Tried looking for any threads regarding similar problems but have yet to find any.

Videos usually play with no problems at all, but as soon as I connect the Macbook to my TV via HDMI, both VLC and Quicktime freezes and can't seem to play the content. If I then pull the plug out and restart the respective player it works just fine.

The video is a MP4 and I have a 15" mid-2014 Macbook Pro Retina.

Any tips on how to solve this?
