counting steps while driving

I went on a quick drive the other day and noticed the watch counted some 100 odd steps. This was for a 5 minute drive. I'm sure it's counting much higher step counts if you have a long daily commute. Anyone else notice this?

I used to have a Garmin Vivoactive and it did the same thing. I'm sure it's hard to avoid with moving motion, road bumps, movement, etc.

Another problem i’ve just realized is that it counts steps but the stand ring will not move. It should be smart enough to know if you’re not actually standing then those movements of your arm aren’t actually steps. I only realized this after I was sitting on my bed eating a snack from a bag, it recorded the movements of my hand to and from the bag as steps but the stand ring remains 0. I made a suggestion to apple about disabling the motion sensor in the watch once our iPhone is connected to the car bluetooth system, now I will also make the suggestion that if we are not standing stop counting steps.

I just experienced this, i’ve gained hundreds of steps just by driving and this is with my right hand, my watch is on my left hand which was on my lap or door arm rest while I drove. Is there any solution to this or work around? It would be nice if the watch was smart enough to detect you were in your car since your phone most likely will be paired with your car infotainment system. This is a huge problem Apple!

I checked on the driving step count this morning. On a 5-mile drive in morning traffic, I got 18 steps in. I suppose this is the result of arm movements, or maybe it is braking.

Unfortunately, even though I have a hybrid, this would still be an expensive way to get all my daily steps in. So, I guess I will have to continue walking. ****.

I think it's equally important but most people just haven't realized that this happens. I don't want few hundreds steps being added only after a 30 minute drive to work. Imagine when it's days off and I;m driving around doing errands and going to the mall etc, I will accumulate more than 1000 driving steps which would just be insane. It really cannot be hard for apple to implement a feature where the watch will not count steps once your cell phone is paired with a car infotainment system. (Think of it as an IFTTT recipe, if you're connected to your car bluetooth then turn of motion tracking)

yes, of course i would also like to get my correct number of steps, but i used several stepcounters as vivosmart, vivoactive, iphone, and see that they all have been tested good, but all of them and others have the same problems with movements which are not really steps but other kinds of movements, such as moving arms, teeth brushing, working at a desk, cooking.....So, due to other stecounters the Apple Watch is acceptable. I compared them all and there is only few difference with that.

The point for me is, that it seems to be really difficult to count exactly only steps. But what i also know is that other smartwatches are much more accurate with getting correct distance, heartrate and depending on that burned calories.

FWIW, I did a short, unscientific test this morning. I walked from my desk to my bedroom and back counting steps. I did it once with arm movement and once with no arm movement (carrying a cup of coffee in my watch hand). Both were close. The actual count was 65 steps. Moving my arms gave a watch count of 71 steps. Carrying a cup of coffee with no arm movement, the count was exactly right 65 steps. This was not enough to test the accuracy, but it does demonstrate the watch does not depend on arm movement for step count.
