Delete photos from iPhone after import - Photos

Can't see why this is so complicated.

Yosemite, Photos and iPhone 5s - why I don't get anything to delete photos after import!

In iPhoto it would ask you just after import is done - here in Photos I see my iPhone on sidebar but none File, Edit menu etc does give option to delete these photos.

Select all doesn't seem to do anything... simple is ok but lack of basic functions not so much!

"Delete after import" is still there on Yosemite and on newer system, provided you do not use iCloud Photo Library on the iPhone. If your iPhone is storing the photos in iCloud, trying to import via a USB connection and trying to delete phots from the iPhone, that are actually stored in iCloud and are only mirrored on the iPhone will just create a mess.

  • You cannot import the photos using USB, if the iPhone is holding only optimized, smaller previews. Then you will only import random photos, that are currently stored in a full resolution.
  • And if you import a few photos and try to delete after import from the iPhone, the deletion would sync back to iCloud and the Mac and then delete the just imported photos from the Mac as well.

With iCloud Photo Library enabled on the iPhone, use only iCloud to transfer the photos, and delete only photos from the iPhone, that you want to delete everywhere, on all devices.

The "Delete items after Import" should only be missing if you enabled iCloud Photo Library on the iPhone; then the Mac simply cannot delete the photos, because it would have to delete them from iCloud and not from the device. And because of the syncing it cannot tell which photos are really new - photos may be synced back from iCloud and appear as new.

finally I got. I noticed this:

  • If you connect the iPhone to the mac via USB when the iPhone is locked, it opens Photos, you unlock the iPhone to see the iPhone photos on Photos: you can import photos without deleting them on the iPhone
  • but if you first unlock the iPhone, then you connect it to the mac via USB: Photos opens and... you have the deleting button (in addition to import buttons)!

I have:

  • iPhone SE, iOS 10.1.1
  • macbook pro 15" late 2013, OS X El Capitan 10.11.6

icould configuration as per attached pics

Gabriele!! Thank you for this workaround. Apple should thank you for posting this!

You are the first person I have seen to point out how to bring back the "Delete items after import" checkbox when importing photos from the iPhone into the photos app on os x.

Unlocking the iphone prior to connecting it via USB indeed brings back this checkbox for people who already have the "iCloud photo library" option turned off on all devices.

It works! Thanks you!
