iphone5c running slow/not responding

My 2 year old iphone 5c seems to have a mind of its own all of a sudden. it sometimes will not response ie won't open mail or when in messages its all over the place, its as though it is overloaded. I have icloud to lessen storage issues but it isnt helping.
