Syncing Notes with Google account

How do I get the Notes app on my Mac to sync with my Google account properly?

Notes are checked in the Accounts preferences under my Google account, but none of my notes show up in the Notes app. New notes do not get synced in Gmail but are rather created in my iCloud account.

I don't have the same problem on my iPhone or iPad - only on my Mac.

Appreciate any insight/guidance on this.
