stinkybumble, thanks for sharing. That is what I was afraid of, and trying hard not to be upset about - Apple dictating what I should target for. What if I were a handicap and cannot stand or a 100-year-old woman (the goal should be much less to be achievable)? What if I were an 18-year-old soccer player (the goal should be much more before it's close to being challenging). Recommended by whom? Based on what data? An average adult has one n&^ and one t*^. Now design according to that!

Sorry for the vent.

If you were 100-year old woman, the target would be different from that of (say) a 20-year old man. That's part of why you set up your age, gender etc in Health in the Apple Watch app on the phone.

And you can set goals in the Workout app.

As I said before, we can expect enhancements over time - this is version 1.0.

You might feel like feeding back to Apple as well - they monitor feedback at the site below and, if enough of us ask for better, we may get it

I assume Apple got their data from somewhere like the NHS (or american health board equivalent). Hopefully as nick101 says, it will become customisable in future Apple Watch updates.

On the NHS website, this is stated as the recommended activity time for adults aged 19-64:

One way to do your recommended 150 minutes of weekly physical activity is to do 30 minutes on 5 days a week.

All adults should also break up long periods of sitting with light activity. Find out why sitting is bad for your health.

What counts as moderate-intensity aerobic activity?

Examples of activities that require moderate effort for most people include:

  • walking fast
  • water aerobics
  • riding a bike on level ground or with few hills
  • doubles tennis
  • pushing a lawn mower
  • hiking
  • skateboarding
  • rollerblading
  • volleyball
  • basketball
