Q: Cannot edit Location info in Photos after migrating from iPhoto

Just received the new Photos app Version 1.0 (209.52.0) via OS X 10.3.3 update.

On opening, it migrated my iPhotos library (c. 60GB) which appears succesful.

Now when I go into Photos I can view but not update Location metadata on any photos.

Has this Location edit feature been removed?

As an aside, I also noticed that although the Getting started with Photos article (Get started with Photos for OS X - Apple Support) indicates that it does not duplicate the source images in iPhoto and Photo libraries, I think this is incorrect.  I can now see 2 x 60GB libraries in my Pictures folder called  "iPhoto Library" and "Photos Library"...

Yes, the feature has been removed.

No, it is not incorrect. The two libraries share the same files using hard links. It just looks like they are separate files in Finder but that isn't true.

OK - I hope Location edit is on the roadmap to include again soon.  That's a backwards step from iPhoto in my opinion.  Shame Apple do not highlight that feature being removed in any online docs, nor installation notes, nor support forums...

RE: dupes - as you say, I also found this article explaining the files are not really duplicated, but linked instead

    Thanks

Send Apple feedback about the lack of location editing.

Believe me, you will not be the only person doing that!

While you are waiting, import new photos first to iPhoto and add the locations there. You can write the GPS tags to exported image file, if you export as "Kind JPEG" and enable to include the location data.

It is really hard to understand, why it is not possible to add location tags or even to correct wrong location tags, since the basic organization of the Photos library depends heavily on location data. It is not easy  to find anything in the moments, if no location is shown.

And Aperture and iPhoto had the Places feature since many years. With Photos Moments it could be much more useful, than it has been in iPhoto or Aperture.
