Apple Watch Favourite Contacts images have disappeared

Yesterday my Apple Watch showed images, and initials in a circle, for each of my favourites (contacts) when I pressed the lower button. Today it no longer shows the images, nor does it show their initials!

I tried restarting the phone and the Apple Watch to no avail.

What is the problem??
