Import from iPhone to Photos.app stalls and cannot be stopped

I have tried and failed twice to import photos into Photos.app directly from an iPhone. First attempt was an iPhone 4S (8.2), second from an iPhone 5 (8.3). Mac is a MacBook Pro 15" mid-2010 (model MacBookPro6,2) running OS X 10.10.3.

In both cases, a set of photos was selected from the device and the "Import xxxx Selected" button clicked. The operation began and photos started to show up in the "Last Import" album. Then when it got to around 150 items, the operation just stalled. Both the progress wheel in the toolbar and progress bar in the "Import" screen were stuck and the "Stop Import" button unresponsive. The computer was left to work for over an hour with no further progress on the task. Had to quit Photos.app to stop the import. Photos.app provided a confirmation sheet informing that quitting would cancel the import. After confirmation the main window closed but the application stayed open for a 5-10 minutes with a small window stating "Closing the library..." I have checked my system logs in but didn't see anything that looked suspect.

My work-around for this issue is to first copy the photos from the iPhones to my Mac using Image Capture, and then import them into Photos.app from there. No problems importing thousands of photos this way, but it takes twice the hard drive space. Would prefer to to be able to do it directly from the device.

Anyone else seeing this behaviour or have a fix for it?

Thanks!

Same problem. Rebooting sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. I did look in the Console and found this message after I quit Photos:

6/30/15 9:27:18.135 PM com.apple.photos.VideoConversionService[517]: Cancellation requested for unknown video conversion job 441CD63D-2A03-416F-807D-0F57EB60F947

and then:

6/30/15 9:27:18.735 PM Photos[390]: Clients blocking shutdown:

RKImporter(0x6080009811e0), registration count = 1

Each time the import was stuck, it was stuck on a video. I'll have to dig further to see if I can figure out what any of this means, but maybe it rings a bell for someone here.

I am having this problem as well. The Photos app stalls for me after importing 474 photos/videos. It is using significant CPU while stalled. I have some moderate sized videos, perhaps it is stuck processing a video as suggested by Matthew although I do not see any indication of this in the console.

Quitting Photos requires a force quit. After restarting the problem reoccurs.

Same problem.. Also do we now really have to delete photos from phone one by one after import? Also noticed as I was doing that, that a couple of baby photos that were supposed to have been imported had not imported and nearly deleted them. This is just awful. Have resorted to importing into separate folders using picasa instead.

I'm having the same problem as detailed in this thread. Specifically when I try to import video from an iPhone 6 Plus to iMac 27 (late 2013, 24 GB RAM) using Photos. It hangs on videos and never finishes. Clicking "Stop Import" has no effect. I force quit and relaunch Photos to start import of remaining files which are all vidoes only as the photos were successfully transferred, it stalls, I click "Stop Import," no effect, force quit, repeat ad infinitum. None of the solutions in this thread have worked for me and I need to transfer video almost every time I connect my iPhone. Have also rebuilt library to no avail.

Aside: You can rebuild your library if it's damaged by all the force-quitting by holding down Command+Option while launching Photos. Select the Repair button when it appears. More details here: http://osxdaily.com/2015/05/21/repair-photos-library-photos-app-mac-os-x/

Here's hoping the next update, El Capitan, fixes it.

Meanwhile I shall look for a different app to transfer images and videos and switch to Adobe Lightroom.

Same here - importing 322 items and stuck at a picture as spot 272. Now it's just sitting there. I am afraid to do anything because I don't want my pictures to get deleted or corrupted. Also if you import it first with Image Capture and then a folder into Photos, and then try to connect your iPhone again, photos will not recognize the already imported photos! That ***** big time!

I think Apple should get to work or give us iPhoto back. Even though iPhoto was not perfect, at least it worked for most of the time.

Thanks,

Martin

This is the most annoying part of my iPhone. I have thousands of photos on my iPhone from trips since summer and every time I try to pull the photos off to my USB via Image Capture or Preview.. even through the new Photo app from Apple... it would start out fine then hangs. I have repeated these steps multiple times and after over 10 days, still have managed to get about 30% of the photos from my phone. Luckily, I have a 64GB phone, but this is unacceptable coming from Apple. Apple needs to get this fix right away. The only reason I am still with Apple is I love some of the apps I have purchased and used over the years, but this is getting ridiculous! Please fix!
