Database to Report Found Apple Devices

Is there a place to report found Apple devices? I was at the gym a while ago and found an iPod shuffle in the locker that someone had left behind. I had lost some clothes there a few weeks before and they were stolen. I took the iPod home to plug it in and find the person's name to reach out to them and let them know I had found their device (I didn't trust the gym's lost and found). However, only the first name identified the person (Colton) and so I couldn't find them.

It'd be fantastic if Apple had a directory where you could post the serial number of a lost product and people could search the directory for their serial number when they lose a device. That way people could post it and return it to the owner. I don't know what to do with this Shuffle that I have now.

Contact the authorities? Are you kidding?

I lost my iPod touch at a local museum. My wife contacted their Lost And Found and discovered that they had found one. My wife picked it up later and brought it home. However, it turns out that it was someone else's iPod touch.

Apple is controlling access to the device through Activation Lock. On the page where one can query whether it is set on a serial number, they should add a link "I found this device" where you can provide contact info to pass to the owner. They already allow owners of lost devices to do something similar.
