Do you still have your original iPhoto or Aperture library?

Then try to migrate again, but  first repair the library in the original application -iPhoto or Aperture:

    • To repair hold down the  alt/option and the command key simultaneously while double clicking the iPhoto application in the Applications folder  to launch the iPhotos Library First aid tools. Hold down both keys firmly and long enough, until the First Aid panel will appear.
    • The select "Repair database".  Repeat with "repair Permissions".

If it still does not suffice, repeat with "Rebuild Library". But make a backup copy of the library before trying to rebuild.

Then try to migrate the library again to Photos by dragging it onto the Photos icon in the Dock.

Thanks Leone, but being a novice this raised more questions and the need for a lot more information. e.g where would I find the iPhoto library? If it is in Time machine (I have a full back up on an external drive) and I restore to iPhoto will this sit alongside Photos or replace it. I was wary to get into more difficulties than I already had without a lot more information. However i noticed that the problem with the thumbnails was only with my recent download and all the photos were still in my camera. I just deleted them and then downloaded again. Problem solved. Thanks again for trying to help me.

When Photos migrated your iPhoto Library to a Photos Library, it did not delete your iPhoto Library but created a new Library. If you did not delete your iPhoto Library it is still where it has always been, by default in your "Pictures" folder.

Or did you delete the original library after migrating to Photos. That is unnecessary, because the original library may look large, but do not use much additional storage. The image files are shared with Photos.

Is the library still there? The iphoto Library will show a fan of pictures icon with a pink flower, the new Photos Library an icon with a flower in rainbow colors.  If it is still there, keep it as a fallback option:  (Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support)
