does the apple watch track steps and miles walked

I used my fitbit to track my steps and miles I walked each day. It automatically synced to my phone. I thought the Apple Watch was supposed to do the same but yet I cant seem to find that it does. I know I can set up a workout and it will do that, but I dont want to set a workout each day. I thought it would just track automatically.
