iMovie videos deleted while upgrading

We just recently updated our Mac from OS version 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard and then on to Yosemite. We mistakenly did not save our videos from iMovie and we fear that most of our precious family videos are gone for good. Any way to retrieve them?

If you did a 'clean instal' and your videos were on your internal HD, they will have been deleted from the directory*. Otherwise (installing 'over' previous OS version, or movies on an external HD) then they should not have been touched.

Did you not have a back-up?

*Since the data on a hard disk is not erased until it is overwritten there is a chance that some of your videos may still be intact. If you Google "mac data recovery" you will find some programs which may help. A specialist data recovery firm may be able to recover something but that will be very expensive.
