What gives? A few days ago it was working, but for the last two days I have had to "manually" get episodes from the iTunes store.

If you see an exclamation mark next to the podcast name, it means iTunes thinks you have stopped listening to the podcast, and to conserve disk space, stopped auto downloading. Click on the exclamation mark, then on the text that appears, to resume downloads.
There are no exclamation points, which is why it is confusing. Even when I right click on the podcast and select "Refresh Podcast" nothing happens. I have several podcasts that are updated daily, and I had to select "Show in iTunes Store" then press the "Get" button to get todays episodes.
Very odd.
I have similar issue. iTunes continues its multi year lock on the worst application by a major software house. Every new download is a cornucopia of new weird bugs.
Plus the interface is really ugly as well as hard to use and understand.
