My MacBook Air's Serial Number Says "Unknown"

My mac book airs serial number says unknown and i believe it is the reason why i can not activate iMessage or FaceTime how do i fix it i can get an appointment in the Apple Store

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Have you had the main board replaced? This happened to me a few years back and it was due to the fact that Apple replaced the main board and did not input the serial number. You must have that number in order to log in.
