MacBook Air 2015 Dual 1080p+ Display Connection?

Specs:

Macbook Air 13" 2015

2.2GHz i7

8GB RAM

256GB Flash Storage

I want to run two monitors (eventually/hopefully greater than 1080p) out of my new MacBook Air. I am currently working on how I could set up a pair of monitors. I know you can run two monitors through the single thunderbolt connection with a thunderbolt hub, but thunderbolt hubs are $200 or more. I have also heard that you can run one monitor through the single thunderbolt port and one through the USB port. From the research I have done, it sounds like there are some performance issues using the USB connected display. Many of the posts I have read are a year or two old. Is there a better solution to this problem?

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)
