I have something of a conundrum: my old iMac died about a month ago, so I can't just erase the drive with Disk Utility (in order to protect my personal information). Short of calling Apple directly, I'm stumped. I'd appreciate any knowledgeable advice. Thank you!

If the suggested Target Disk Mode doesn’t work then I’d go to iFixit, find your iMac’s repair guide, remove the hard drive and physically destroy it. If your iMac is dead because the hard drive won’t boot, think about replacing the hard drive and then selling it.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the target disk mode first--why not? I have physically destroyed a hard drive (about 15 years ago) but they were much easier to get to in those long ago days! I'll check out fixit.com right now.
