All music disappeared from iTunes in the middle of a song. Why?

As I was driving home last night, listening to a playlist on iTunes, the music stopped in the middle of a song. When I stopped the car, I found the entire iTunes library to be empty. I reloaded it, run Match and now it works.

My question is WHY this happened, and how I can prevent it from happening again.
