Move from Aperture?

Nope - CaptureOne Pro does not show keywords under the thumbnails, no idea if it ever will. You should probably not spend any time with CaptureOne since keywords under thumbnails is your #1 priority.

People go to CaptureOne for the image quality, raw conversion and color editing capability. For me, top notch image quality trumps top notch DAM - DAM features should be good, but don't need to be perfect.

I had the same expectations but as I stated in a separate question, when I insert a SD card, Aperture still opens but the old import options do not come up. BTW I have more than 102K photos.

This is my motivation to continue with Aperture for as long as possible. As for now, I intend on using the Mac photo program "Lyn" for organizational purposes. ( I will not provide a link because Apple will probably delete it.) Then a another, different program for photo editing.

Presently, Aperture appears to be the ONLY alternative with good organizational capabilities, and the ability to display Keywords under Thumbnails.

Hi Richard, I see that your are on 10.10.3 with Aperture 3.6. I expect that this kind of non functionality is going to increase slightly throughout 10.10 as we get more 10.10 updates, Apple cares about its "Photos" SW, so that will get the priority over Aperture and iPhoto.

Once El Capitan is out, things will go down hill even faster, as Aperture and iPhotos will get no priority at all.

I have personally stayed at 10.9 for that reason, and will do so until I am fully transitioned away from Aperture.

I have yet to discover any good reason to upgrade to 10.10 although I suppose I will eventually as Apple stops making critical security updates to 10.9.

Hello ericnepean. Though it is possible, I doubt if the upgrades caused the problem. Because the problem occurred weeks after the latest upgrade. Usually if you have a problem the first thing you are asked is if you are up to date with upgrades. Do you think that Aperture is getting ANY support at all? I would suspect that there is no support for it. It is a shame since I purchased Aperture after having a corrupt iPhoto library and have been very happy with it.

I think you are correct in your comment that the upgrade didn't cause your problem, reasoned from the timing of the problem.

Regarding support for Aperture in 10.10, Apple did say Aperture would work in 10.10. Based on comments from Terence Devlin in other threads it sounds like a little product testing is still done, but it gets low priority. This is what I would expect in the last release of a product with a dwindling user base, from my experience in the SW industry.

You may get some help for your problem if you can find an Apple Genius who knows Aperture, or possibly if you call the Apple help line. Or possibly not, if the people you deal with are relatively new - there won't have been much Aperture training in the last 2 years for the helpline and genius staff. Depends on luck I think.

This illustrates why I think it's time to bail out. El Capitan will become the curent release in 4-6 months, at that time OSX 10.10 support will be reduced or quit completely, and official Aperture support will drop to zero.

I was..and still am...so ****** for Apple doing this re dumping Aperture.

I invested a huge part of my profession setting up libraries for clients using Aperture and now they are all left out in the cold.

This from a company that has more assets than many nation states. I would have assumed they could carry it on even at a loss to save face, or even have sold Aperture off to another party to continue a service for its clients.

Obviously Apple has gone for the money in phones, the spreadsheet suits decreed that Aperture be killed. No spirit, just greed.

Apple is now all about greed and capturing everyone in its web. A far cry from the spirit that created Apple in the first place.

Anyhow I am over to C1...as I share similar thoughts about Adobe.

It would be great if Apple gave Aperture over to some kind of open source freeware as a gesture of consideration.

I have been trying out Capture One Pro. One thing I quickly noticed when transferring my Aperture images is that not all of them transferred and Capture One does not inform you that it skipped any. It is not easy looking through thousands of images trying to compare the list to what I had in Aperture to find what is missing. Most troubling, though is that I have one particular TIF file, sandwiched amongst others in the same folder on my drive, that Capture One refuses to import or even acknowledge is in the folder. It does not appear anywhere in the import window even though it has no strange characters in the filename and has the same tiff extension as the others. It concerns me that I might in the future import a folder or card of images and not realize Capture One has skipped a few of them for no apparent reason and didn't tell me.

Capture One is also giving me the beachball a lot, especially when switching between folders. At this point I am attributing it to preview generation but the "activity" window doesn't always show what activity is ongoing so it is just a guess. It will be a few hours before it is done generating them all.

Capture One is very weak on keywording. It seems like it would be a simple change to implement a keywording system like Aperture's. Lightroom's is okay but Aperture's is so much better.

Lightroom is Lightroom. I remember why I chose Aperture instead of Lightroom years ago. Lightroom seems so cobbled together and convoluted and segmented. I know some of this is just the learning curve but that's no excuse.

I am still searching for an adequate replacement with respect to usuability. Other applications have advanced editing options that are superior to the Aperture's tools, but the interface is not as intuitive. It is so easy to customize Aperture's tools with presets, and I found nothing that is as versatile as Aperture's Keyword tools.

So am I. I was pretty impressed with Capture One other than the keywording weakness but then I ran into this problem with importing which, even if rare, means I will never trust it to have imported all my images. It appears it doesn't like this particular coding of TIF but it is a valid image file with a valid filename and extension and is not corrupt and it should at least tell me it has a problem with it versus acting like it isn't there at all. That is unacceptable file handling.

If I thought the Photos app would be given some of the features we lost, I might try to wait it out. But I am afraid that is not the direction Apple will take. I don't need more ways to "share" my images in the "cloud" and I don't want the feature set of my desktop app minimized to whatever one can do on an iPad.

I really do not like Lightroom but so far it is the front runner in this race with no winners.

Before you finish preparing your Aperture library you should max out the previews option. I'm in the same spot. I exported Aperture to Photos and it truly *****. Within a few hours I had deleted the Photos library and returned to the comfort and simplicity of Aperture. If you use Aperture now, Photos is awful, especially for large, referenced libraries. Dont even go there.

Whatever you choose as the next software, you'll be thankful to max the previews out. Bloats the library file but the photos are preserved.

I had exactly the same experience with Photos. After an extremely short period of usage, I decided that Apple's brainstorm of recompiling Photos from the iPhone for the Mac was one of their worst.

I immediately started research the third party apps that I can use instead of it. So far the one that seems to be most interesting to me is Capture One. As soon as I recover from my health problems, I will be downloading a demo copy of it.

Let me know how it goes. I've looked at Lightroom and its seems cluttered. It's probably just fine but its not immediately intuitive to me as a new user. I'll be looking at Capture 1 too.

Once again I must agree with you about Lightroom seeming cluttered. The best description I have LR is kluge, it certainly doesn't seem like there was any design philosophy behind it for sure. In the past, I was forced to work with LightRoom/PhotoShop. It was not a happy experience. So after Apple announces the demise of Aperture and iPhoto, Adobe was not even on my list as a possible candidate.
