Q: Kernel Panic

Hi.

Don't know if anybody can shed any further light on this issue.

As of Tuesday my Mac Pro (A1186 MacPro 3,1) has gone into a Kernel Panic that it is unable to recover from.

It was running screensaver at the time and there have been no recent hardware or software upgrades.  It had been running fine

earlier in the morning.  The only recent change to anything around the mac was it was moved from it's normal spot by about a metre as access was required

to the wall behind it, but even that was a few days before.

Since Tuesday I have not been able to login successfully.  It gets to the Apple Logo and then proceeds to the "You need to restart your

computer..." message.

I have tried;

-Removing everything except keyboard, mouse and 1 monitor.

-starting up from the time machine backup disk (unsuccessful)

-Starting up from a Mountain Lion Disk (unsuccessful)

-Starting up from a 10.5.1 install disk (unsuccessful)

-Starting from an old backup system disk (unsuccessful - but it may have issues, disk utility doesn't seem to like it)

-using disk utility to check/verify the original start up disk.

-reseating the RAM (8gig of ram in 4 sticks)

-limiting RAM to two sticks of 4 Gig total and rotating through to try and isolate a bad RAM module . No change in behaviour.

-Removing and reseating the video card (GeForce card of some description - can't see a model # at the moment)

I can get it to display a choice of startup drives by Option key on startup and I can connect to it via Firewire (T key on startup) and browse

the drives okay.  Though the only other machine I have here is an old G4 PowerPc.

At this stage I am thinking it is a logic board issue or possibly a video card issue.  Not sure what else to try really.

The first Panic Log is below.  I don't know if somebody is well versed at interpreting them?

    Hello Aryoch,

Try booting into safe mode: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

    Then uninstall this software:

    com.squirrels.airparrot.framebuffer    3

    ng.uds.netusb.controller    1.59

and reboot normal. Make sure to use only vendor-provided uninstallers or uninstallation instructions. Never try to delete files by hand. Never use an "app zapper".

    Hi Etresoft.

    Thanks for the reply.

I missed detailing that in the litany of the things I've tried. My apologies.

It will not boot into Safe mode. I've tried repeatedly.    Just produces the same error "You need to restart...".

    Cheers

    Hello again Aryoch,

That's not good. It is probably a logic board or video failure.

The other possibility is that the file system is corrupted really badly, or the disk is so broken it is just returning junk.

If you have another way to boot the system from a backup clone.  The Recovery partition, A network boot?

Boot holding the "Option" key and see what is available.  Try them all.

If alternate boot devices does not work, then it is time for a Genius Bar appointment.

    Hi BobHarris

    Thanks.

I've tried booting from system DVD's and the time machine disk and a spare system drive I normally keep in the cupboard and I've tried booting into the recovery partition.  None of which has worked.

I ran Disk Utility checks over my normal start up drive (via a Firewire 'T' connection) and it checked out okay.

No Genius Bar here in Tasmania/Hobart unfortunately.  I've already checked with the apple shop.

I have found somebody who has access to the Apple diagnostic tool and going to run that across the machine Monday. Not quite sure how that works but guess I'll find out.

    Thanks
