Macbook Air Poor Battery Life

I have a mid-2012 Macbook air and I've noticed recently my battery life is horrible. I've read every single other thread about this issue but nothing really helped and even the most recent is from a couple of years ago. Obviously now it's 2015 and my macbook is running on Yosemite, so its not the battery issue that everyone seemed to have with Mavericks.

Just writing that small section I went from 73% to 68% and at the current 68% I only get an estimated 2 hours and 10 minutes remaining. I've also had only Safari running this whole time.

Option clicking the battery icon reveals that the condition is normal, as well as the power system report. It also has gone through only 441 cycles, no where near its 1000 cycle "limit" and its health is already down to 77%. While obviously the condition is normal and doesn't say I need to replace the battery I feel that I should, based off of everything else.

1. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.

2. Follow these instructions, or thesefor OS X 10.8 or earlier.

3. In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck the box marked

Enable Power Nap while on battery power

if it's shown (it may not be.)

4. You can also try resetting the SMC.

5. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.

6. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

Hello Brinamou,

Often excessive battery usage is due to unexpected CPU usage. I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

Have macbook air from mid 2012 - I installed Yosemite November 2014 and since then I'm having problem with my battery - it has been draining super fast - 4hrs battery life now compared to earlier 8hrs.

I reinstalled Yosemite, didn’t help and then made a clean reinstallation of Yosemite about 5 days ago and there is still the same drain issue.

Thank you in advance!

Here is the Etre Check Report:

Problem description:

The battery has been draining super fast - 4hrs battery life now compared to earlier 8hrs.

Hello again toni529,

Your EtreCheck report is very good. There don't appear to be any software problems.

You can try to do an SMC Reset. Here are instructions from Apple: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

If that doesn't work, you can run Activity Monitor and view the Energy Tab. Keep it up while you use your machine and see if there are any processes that keep using your power and see if you and relate that to what you are doing. If you find something, reply with your findings and we can help suggest ways to improve the power usage.

Another option would be to make an appointment with the Apple Genius bar. Charge the machine and take a screen shot at 100%. Then use it for 3 hours before taking it in. If it is at 25% at that point, then the Apple Genius may be able to see what you are doing that is taking up so much energy.

Hi Etresoft,

Thank you very much for your help! I made SMC reset, followed the instructions how to reset SMC, but didn't notice anything different from the previous state of the computer - poor battery life and the fan is running immediately after turning it on. How should I know that I performed it correctly?

Thank you in advance for your reply!

Jun 2, 2015 5:59 PM in response to etresoft

Hi,

I stumbled on this thread while I was trying to diagnose what's happening with the battery on my early 2015 MBA. I lose about 1% of battery per minute, which gives me roughly 100 minutes of time between charges. This is obvisouly no where near what I should be getting.

I downloaded your program and my report is below. launchd, UserEventAgent, and fseventsd are all using whopping amounts of my CPU (over 40%), so I'm thinking they're part of the problem. I have a separate "test" profile on my MBA and its largest CPU user is under 5%.

Thanks much.

Hello missmax9,

You should also start a new thread for your question. However, I can tell you right now that a 2015 MacBook Air is not going to run well with the ancient software you have installed on it. Uninstall anything listed above under "Kernel Extensions" or "Startup Items". Use only vendor-provided uninstallers or uninstallation instructions. Never try to delete these files by hand. Never use an "app zapper". You may need to erase the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. Therefore, you probably need a backup before anything.

Hi Etresoft

Recent purchase of MacBook Air. Copied older machine to this one - however OS is fully updated.

Any feedback / opinion:
