Perhaps I'm a bit obsessive, but I've saved every email message I've sent or received since 1996 (except 30 that were lost -- and I know where they went.) It's occasionally useful, but its slowing down Mail. Time to offload ten years' worth into an archive.
Before I write an AppleScript to do this, I thought I'd ask: Have you archived messages out of mail? How did you do it?

Click on mailbox, then Archive Mailbox.
Select the mailbox, right click on the mailbox and select Export Mailbox. A copy of the mailbox will be placed on your desktop.
Well, that works, thanks, but I had hoped to find a way to archive, then delete, all messages dated before, say, Jan 1, 2000 in all mailboxes into a searchable file. This method does not seem to have a way to discriminate on date. Does it?

Make a rule in Mail to move all mail older than 1/1/2000 to a new folder, export that.

Uh-oh. The rulemaker dropdown allows only "xx days old"; not a date. I guess I'll calculate it...

Email Archiver says on their website that they have a version that works in 10.6.8, but the website doesn't say how to get it. I found an email address for their support website, but haven't heard back.
