My late 2011 MacBook Pro (2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3, running OS X version 10.9.5) started making loud noises and being VERY slow with downloading music from CDs this morning. It occurred after I had successfully downloaded 3 CDs. How do I fix this?

"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

Your optical drive is broken or nearly so. You have 2 choices. Either get it fixed or purchase an external burner/drive. The latter is the cheapest way to go.
I ended up getting an external drive. Thanks for the advice!
