My iMac is eating my bandwidth

I have a late 2009 21.5 iMac 10.10.3. Verizon supplies me with DSL and I have been complaining to them about unpredictable and wide variations in my connection speed for some time without resolution until today. The V technician discovered that the iMac is intermittently using 110% of my bandwidth. It happens if I am connected wirelessly and/or with ethernet cable. It seems random. I have disconnected all peripherals. I can test the connection speed with my Air wirelessly on the same modem. I also have a VOIP on the modem, but that has no effect. My speed is fine until I put the iMac on the network. Sometimes the bandwidth is OK, and then, randomly, it goes to near nothing. When that happens, disconnecting the iMac restores the service instantly. I have an active iCloud account. Should I edit what goes to the cloud? I also have Google Drive and Dropbox, but they are not automatic. Where to start?? TIA!

I am working now from my MBA on the same network with the iMac disconnected from the network.

here is what I get:

I am starting to think that there is something seriously wrong with the iMac.

I have Disk Warrior. Also, I have never done a clean install since 2009! I can do that, I think, as I made a Yosemite startup disk. Seems bit drastic though. Very hard for me to do much to the iMac online. Thoughts?

That indicates an ISP issue, not a Mac issue. OS X does not govern the download speed. You may want to run the same test on another device such as any other computer in the house. If the other device has a faster speed then your next stop is to either call AppleCare and get help or take it to an Apple Store and see what setting you have that isn't correct.

Well I see a number issues with your system. Over the years of owning the machine you have added a lot of junk.

First you have SmithMicro antvirus installed, not only is an antivirus app 100% unnecessary it robs your system of valuable resources. OS X does not require any cleaning, antivirus, or other third party maintenance utilities. I suggest locating the developers instructions for uninstalling it and any other similar utilities. In order to keep OS X safe it only requires keeping it up-to-date and using a bit of common sense. The common sense is simple.... first NEVER download from a torrent site, NEVER respond to a phone call, e-mail, or ad telling you the system has a virus or is compromised, this is a SCAM. Finally never download from a site you do not trust.

Next is your system is running dangerously low on HD Space, it only has 95GB available. I strongly recommend moving large libraries such as your iTunes, iPhoto (or Photos) and iMovie libraries to an external HD.

Third is your system is starved for RAM. I would recommend upgrading that too.

Finally, you have a large amount Internet Pluggins installed, likely many are out-of-date or are now unnecessary.

Due to all of these issues what I would recommend is doing an Erase and Install of your system and starting over. Before you start backup the computer and test the backup. I would make a clone of the internal HD so you can restore the apps and libraries you want. Then manually install up-to-date apps and moving the large libraries you have accumulated to an external HD. I suspect by doing so you

Unless you get drastically different numbers with another device when the iMac is not connected, (8 or 10Mbps download vs the 2.70 here) this tell me its an ISP issue, mainly your internet bandwidth is really low. when the iMac is connected its probably trying to download an update or something. Which such low bandwidth ictuses it up to finish the download as fast as possible.

That's not something you can change on your iMac, it something you need to talk to Verizon about and get a package with more bandwidth.
