I started my Mac mini from the install disc and then needed to do a software upgrade. It downloaded the updates and needs to reboot. When I click to reboot it freezes on the shutdown screen. I can hard turn it off and back on but it doesn't register the restart.
I had the same issue and was able to get the update to install. I decided to check more info to see if there were more than 1 update and I found there was. I installed all the non OS updates and they went through. Then after that I did the main OS update alone and it went through without problems.

Brilliant! Maybe I'm being premature here but... I've been having the same issue.
After downloading updates it freezes on shutdown screen when trying to Restart.
Now doing updates in smaller chunks and it appears to be working. Happy bunny!
What model Mini?
What OSX version was on before the update?
What were you updating to?
Describe just what you did since it is strange that you has to use an install disk to upgrade.
II got it from work and wanted to reformat it before using it at home, that is why I ran the install disc. It is from late 2009. The install disc says Mac OS X 10.6.2. The iTunes version it has on it is too old to work, so I want to do an upgrade so I can use my iTunes.

What exactly happens when you start the Mini?
Does the power light light?
Can you hear the fan spin?

It starts just fine. I can't use iTunes because it is too old. That is when I tried to do the software update and restart. It appears to have downloaded the updates just fine but when I go to restart, it just freezes on the shutdown screen and does nothing. I've left it for hours and still nothing. If I turn it off by holding down the power button, it shuts down and I can turn it back on, but the update doesn't go into effect.
I will try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM when I get home tonight.

What were you updating to?
Did you go to the Mac App Store and try to upgrade to an OSX version higher than 10.6.8
Did did you try to update 10.6.4 to 10.6.8?
If the latter then try booting from the install DVD and repairing the disk via Disk Utility
New try reinstalling the OS via the install disk.
I'm not sure and I'm at work now, so I can't look until later.

I'm trying to update from 10.6.2.
im not sure what I'm trying to update to.
If you have successfully installed 10.6.2 from the DVD then you click on the Apple Icon in upper left and select Check For Updates. The you update via the message/window that opens.
After you do that exactly what happens?
It has successfully been installed. the message box staying that there are updates available pops up. I click continue to install and restart. It downloaded 5 items. Then the window pops up saying the download is complete and I need to restart to complete the install. I click on restart and the icons all go away and it's just the backdrop, like a normal shut down, but it never gets past that point.
I have just redone it again To get the complete steps for you.
