Q: My Mac mini won't reboot after a software update.

I started my Mac mini from the install disc and then needed to do a software upgrade. It downloaded the updates and needs to reboot. When I click to reboot it freezes on the shutdown screen. I can hard turn it off and back on but it doesn't register the restart.

Thanks. The Mac works but doesn't reboot after software updates are made to it. I need to get iTunes updated so I can back up my phone.

    Hi there.

Can you advise on the best way to manually "wipe" my hard drive prior to installing the new OS?

I have attempted to use the Disk Utility on the new DVD when restarting but my mac ejects the disk automatically and apparently won't boot directly from it (and this may not be supported anymore I guess).

I am trying to use these steps:  http://www.mactip.net/how-to-securely-wipe-your-mac-hard-drive-before-selling-it /

Another problem. Because I bought this used from someone years ago, I do not know any of the passwords to make changes to hd. I attempted to log in as administrator in safe mode but even that is requiring a password...

    Thanks,

    Steph

    - Try using a cleaning disk. However, the optical drive may be broken. The optical drive on my late 2009 Mini failed with same symptom over three years ago..

    - Do you have an external USB DVD optical drive which has it own power support that you can use to boot from? insert the DVD and boot with the Option key depressed.

    - Unless a firmware PW was assigned then you can boot fro DVD and format/wipe the HD.

Ok, gotcha. Thanks, I'll try that...or I may just wait for my insurance check to come through so I can buy a replacement laptop, sigh.

I do not have an external optical drive to use.

I really appreciate all of your fantastic help!

    Take care,

    Steph
