iTunes won't open after update of OS X Yosemite

After the latest update to my MacBook Air that included the Photos app, iTunes won't open and the OS won't let me uninstall it so I can install a clean version of iTunes. I need to make local back ups of my iOS devices, Help please!

Already tried that! I downloaded iTunes from the iTunes page and let the system do the installation for me and even restarted the computer after installation, but it didn't work. I'm new to Mac OS X, but it's an irritating issue because the system won't let me uninstall it manually and the downloaded version seems to install without errors but, still it won't open.

Apr. 2015 Niel post: Re-install iTunes application - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6990002?answerId=28055467022#28055467022 - delete the old application first, with instructions on how to do that.

April 2015 LincDavis post with a bit more detail on the method Niel outlines - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7002727?answerId=28101611022#28101611022

A similar technique by Ben.d using Terminal to delete the application - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6985231?answerId=28036630022#28036630022 Normally you don't have to delete an old application but this time it seems to be necessary for some.

It worked! Thanks Goober5!

Like I said before, I'm new to Mac OS X, but I always back up everything. So, even though I haven't worked with the Terminal, I didn't hesitate to follow the instructions. Pretty easy and straight forward... well, when you know what you are doing. Once again, thanks everyone for your help.

OMG! WHAT WAS THAT?!

Holy Moley! I just spent the better part of an hour trying to wrestle Yosemite back into running iTunes, which it just suddenly decide to stop doing (probably because, like a dummy, I've had my system set up so Apple can sneak in and "update" — aka: "Trash"— my system when I'm not looking.) I'm a twenty-year Mac veteran and tried everything to uninstall (pretty much impossible, since OSX "needs" iTunes), overwrite with an earlier version (says it installed but can't be found), trashed all pref files... tried everything... then found Goober5's solution and BAM!... worked right away.

Thanks Goober5! You are my brand new best friend!
