Hi! I have been trying to reinstall Facebook; however each time, it takes endlessly with an error message "cannot connect to the itune store" even when I am connected to the wifi connection. Similarly, other apps that require updates have the same issue. Appreciate your help in resolving this. Thanks.

Well, first off you should run https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/
Check your connection if there's something related with your DSN and blocks you to connect to iTunes. Did you try with another wifi connection or using 3G?
What if you connect your device in to iTunes and then sync and download or update app..
Did you perform hard reset and reset all settings ?
