Q: MacPro 2010 (5,1) graphics and kernel panics on Yosemite

I have a 2010 Mac Pro 8 core machine with 12GB of ram and the 5770 graphics card.  After the Yosemite (10.10) upgrade I had some random freezes and kernel panics.  I rebuilt the computer on a new harddrive and put a fresh install of Yosemite on it.  Re-installed the software and copied the data back (didn't do a time machine restore) and the problem kept happening.  Now after upgrading to 10.10.3 the machine has become unusable.  It boots up and shortly after logging into it, it freezes.  The freezes occur a few different ways

1) screen goes black and nothing can get it back

2) The screen freezes but the mouse still moves

3) The screen freezes and then the machine restarts

I've disconnected all peripherals (backup drive and scanner) and it still happens.  It happens regardless what software I have running although I would say that iTunes is always running.  There is no way to make it occur on demand although it has degraded to the point where I cannot use the computer at all.

I tried running diagnostics but Apple doesn't include it in the Yosemite install package when you install it yourself (I think with 10.10.3 they do now)

The diagnostics logs have tons of GPU restart logs and panics as well a kernel panic.

I am hesitant to bring this to Apple due to the age of the machine and figure I'd try here first.

Please help.

Sorry, yes they are supported. However, I'm not sure the older hardware was actually tested well because of the issues I keep seeing out there like glitchy screens and freezing. I'm just thinking with Dooga using the old working card and getting the same problem, perhaps it is the driver that still has some issues.

I also remember when I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, my monitor wouldn't display anything due to a the newer video driver not working properly. I had to remote to that machine and install an older kext that still worked to be able to use my monitor again. Of course versions after that fixed that problem, but I still wonder how well the newer drivers work with the older hardware.

Maybe the driver is fine and its the hardware itself that has failed. But do I search for another 5770, or try something else? Some of those cards seem hard to come by. Thank you for any more advice you can give on these issues!

That initial issue of inadequate Drivers has long since been fixed.

issues I keep seeing out there like glitchy screens and freezing

That sounds like you have a Hardware Problem.

For a 2010 running current Mac OSX, you have many options. This article lays out the caveats, and lists SOME of the cards available.

Great! Thanks for the list Grant! Yes, it has to be a hardware failure. I think the only other option I have is trying a clean install of Snow Leopard (that came with the machine) and seeing if the issue still occurs. Then I know for sure its a hardware failure. But a new video card would be nice anyway, now I will just need purchase approval for that.

The Apple Hardware test is good for GROSS failures, such as the Video memory has completely failed, but it has a long history of "no fault found" on graphics cards that are failing in system.

Just wanted to give an update. The problem was indeed my video card. I ended up buying a cheaper EVGA GeForce GT 740 for $99 and the card works just fine except for not having the Apple boot menus (doesn't have Apple firmware). Just glad to have a stable machine once again. Thanks again for your help.

    Hello

It seems I do have the same issue on a late 2010-imac - where I might not be able to "replace" the graphics card nor is there a question whether the GPU is supported. Anyone an idea what I could try?

You will first need to un-Install this:

    com.avira.kext.FileAccessControl  1.0.0d1

If that is their so-called Anti-Virus, you should leave it un-Installed permanently. Virus scanners are a leading cause of instability on the Mac, and they make a Big Show of scanning files for items that are NOT an Issue on the Mac.

In addition, they give you the feeling you are somehow protected from something. Scanning for files that are not a problem on the Mac does not protect you from other very real threats that depend on your lack of attention to invade your Mac and steal your data.
