Why won't time machine back up to external after updating to maverick?

I recently had to visit the Genius Bar for a problem, and there they upgraded me to Maverick.

Now my time machine won't back to my external hard drive.

I get a message that says 'back up being prepared' but it never starts.

any help is appreciated.
