Q: how do I copy my CDs from my ipod classic to itunes on my PC?

I've been using my laptop to import my CDs into iTunes on there.  I've been syncing my iPod Classic to my laptop.

Now I also want to use iTunes on my desktop.  I've installed iTunes there and connected my iPod Classic via USB and expected all the content on there to sync with iTunes on my PC but nothing has happened.  I can't see any other option to copy all my CDs over.  Is it not possible?

iPod classic, Windows 7

The sync is one way - computer to iPod.  The exception is iTunes purchases.

You should copy everything from the laptop to the desk top

As roaminggnome says, you should copy your iTunes library from your laptop to the desktop.  See How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support for the "official" guidance, as well as turingtest2's user tip on Make a split library portable for techniques to bring your library into the layout most appropriate to enable migration.  Tt2's user tip on Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy describes a suitable/recommended method for reliable transfer between machines, using an external hard drive (or, for a small library, USB thumb drive) as a transport mechanism.

Syncing only seemed to offer to go one way - empty PC iTunes to iPod, thus blanking the latter!  So I backed out of that one.  Maybe I missed a direction choice somewhere.

Anyway, in the end I simply copied the whole iTunes folder from my laptop to an external hard drive and then copied that to my PC. All seems well. I've never bought any iTunes songs, just loaded my CDs, so I guess that made it simpler for the boxes and software!

Many thanks people for your prompt and helpful suggestions. I really appreciate it.

You're welcome.  You didn't miss anything: sync operations are, by definition, one way - the only exception being for iOS devices where you can transfer iTunes Store purchases from am iDevice to iTunes.  There are workarounds (most requiring 3rd party tools) that allow you to recover content from an iDevice in the event of an emergency, but this won't be necessary as long as you maintain an up to date backup of your library.
