how to highlight multiple files

i had to replace my old iMac with a new 27' running yosemite OS

for some reason I am not able to hi-lite more than one email file in "MAIL" using the typical click and drag over what i want to hi-lite. i can use the command key and click on as many emails i want to hi-lite but would like the option of just dragging over as many as I want in one operation to delete them.

in my old iMac all i had to do was drag down or up on items i wanted to hi-lite. if i go into my Hard drive i can hi-lite as many files etc. i want with the drag over method. why doesn't 'MAIL' work the same way/

The scroll bars are hidden by default as you don't need them unless using an old scroll wheel mouse, or worse. I don't know how a Mighty mouse works. On a Trackpad I just drag two fingers up or down to scroll.

You can adjust the visibility in the General System Preferences.

when u say shift-select do u mean

hold down shift key when I click on the start point and drag over items to hi-lite

No. Select the first item, the scroll without clicking to the end item. Hold down shift and select it. All the ones in between will be selected.
