I'm not sure what you mean by captions. Photos can have titles, but they have to be added -- they are not automatically created. In iPhoto, if a photo had no title, its filename would be displayed instead. Photos does not do that. If you were using filenames as titles in iPhoto, thinking they were the same thing as titles, you may find one of the Automator based batch change scripts in the User Tips section helpful.

You can still open your iPhoto Library in iPhoto.

When you first launched Photos it created a converted copy of your iPhoto Library. The original library is left in place. Drag iPhoto from the Applications folder back to your Dock and double click it to launch. It will warn you, that the library has been upgraded, but simply click the "open iPhoto" button and if will open your old iPhoto library. If you find, that the iPhoto icon has been crossed out, your current iPhoto version is not compatible with MacOS X 1010.3 and you need to update to version 9.6.1.

See this User Tip, how to update: Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities

(updating is a bit tricky now, that Apple stopped selling iPhoto).

Which kind of captions did you have in iPhoto?

iPhoto has two ways to add captions to a photo, and you can see both in Photos, if you select a photo and open the "Info" panel.

  1. iPhoto's "name" field: Any text you added as the name will show as a title in Photos in the Info panel.
  2. iPhoto's "description" field: Any text you added as the description will show as a description in the Info panel.

Select a photo and click ⌘i to reveal the info panel:

Enable the display of metadata in the "View" menu. Enable all checkmarks in "View > Metadata" to see as much of the migrated data as possible.

What you cannot restore this way are the names of the photos in iPhoto, if iPhoto simply used the filenames as names for the image versions. If you did not add the names manually, Photos will show an empty title, as R C_R pointed out.

To add music to your slideshow, use "file > Create Slideshow" and create a regular Slideshow project.

To select music for the slideshow, click the Music button User uploaded file, click the down arrow next to Music Picker, then select a song or songs.

The Music picker will let you select songs from your iTunes Library or from the predefined theme music.
