Q: Apple ID passwords for Applications

I am having a lot of strange issues with passwords since the latest Yosemite update.

 

I am frequently prompted to create an application password - presumably for FaceTime and Messages.  This is, apparently, required in addition to my regular AppleID password.  I press the button to create a new password and a password is displayed - which I can copy.  But where do I use this password?  Somehow, in fiddling around with this, I found somewhere to enter the password and satisfy Yosemite for a time.  But, from time to time, this prompt reappears - but now I ignore it and FaceTime & Messages still works.

 

Also, every time I log in to Apple Discussions I am now required to use 2-step verification.  This all reminds me of that very funny ad with IBM and PC and the guy in dark glasses relaying Vista security messages.  Has Apple been recruiting Vista programmers?

 

What is going on here?

    Maybe you set it up. Try this link and see if you can undo it.

    As for the other question, try opening Preferences in FaceTime and signing out then back in again.

    In Messages, it's Preferences > Accounts.

    Thanks for the suggestion.  I do have 2-step verification set up - but its not supposed to be required to log into Apple Discussions!

     

    Also, in relation to the app-specific passwords, these are supposed to be only for third party apps - not Apple mail/messages/facetime etc.

     

    Its all very odd - but then I have to say Yosemite has proven to be the least stable Mac OS I have experienced ever - and I started on the one before Tiger over 12 years ago...

    Um, yeah, I logged out of FaceTime but now cannot log back in.  I guess it has some other password other than my usual AppleID password now.

    I checked in manage my apple ID and there were 5 app-specific passwords for FaceTime.  I revoked them all - you would think I would then be able to log in with my Apple ID.  But I just get "An error occurred during activation. Try again."

     

    Luckily I don't use FaceTime very often.

     

    This happens on both my Macs - somehow Yosemite seems to be confused about Messages and FaceTime and treats them, from time to time, as though they were third party apps.

     

    Oh, I can;t log into Messages any more on this Mac either.  Must have been an app-specific password for Messages in that list of 5.  Presumably I will have the same issue on my other Mac now...

    Okay, two step verification removed - sorted the problems with iMessage and FaceTime - now just using the normal AppleID password.

     

    Now I will put two stage verification back on and see whether I can log in to Apple/discussions without having to enter a code...
