I've been advised that (quote) 'it's likely a problem with your OS install rather than the hard drive. It’s time consuming, but you might try reinstalling OS X on your primary startup hard drive.
Because my iMac has no install disk I presume it's done some other way.

Hi Makey here is the support page from Apple. It's very straight forwards. It involves starting your iMac in recovery drive then reinstalling OS X.

I noticed that, after I'd chosen the Mountain Lion reinstall, it stated 'checking to see if this computer is valid' or words to that effect. Does that mean I can't use the reinstall after my Apple Warranty expires?

Its checking if you have a license for that OS. e.g. For Yosemite, you have to at least have purchased Snow Leapord or above for the "free" upgrade. If you ran mountain lion before, you won't have an issue with that software check. You don't still need to be under warranty
