I have a mid 2010 MBP with 8GB RAM 2.66GHz processor and Nvidia Geforce 320M I have Safari v8.0.5 It works fine for most sites but will not connect to some https:// sites. I have also two iMacs with Lion they can connect to these sites without problem why

Safari returns an error message on some https sites (www.facebook.com and a private portal for a school to which parents have access) it says it cannot make a secure connection. I also have a IMac with 10.7.5 and a Powerbook G4 which can both successfully contact those sites. My internet broadband is a fast fibre connection. What is going on with this latest version of Safari?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), Safari 8.0.5 and all updates

Could you post a copy of the error message from Safari, which

occurs in your MacBook Pro, running 10.10.3 Yosemite...?

Did you look into the Support link about security in Safari?

•About the security content of Safari 8.0.5, Safari 7.1.5, and Safari 6.2.5 - Apple Support

There may be settings related to messages in the browser

based on the results you've experienced when using it.

Also, there may be some third-party extensions or add-ons

to the Safari browser that may not sit well when visiting some

web sites. And some of them are considered adware, etc.

How does Firefox handle those other sites?

In any event...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

I have tried turning off all browser extensions but it makes absolutely no difference. I tried a week ago to clear all cashes including DNS (I use Open DNS) and I used Onyx to reset all permissions. Having done this I could reach Facebook and thought I had fixed the problem but it has 'come back'.

I attempted to upload screen shots but this has not been allowed.

Thank-you for that. I have been experimenting to prove or disprove if this is anything to do with keychains. I have an HDD which has Mavericks installed. It was the original disk for this machine. I have not so far upgraded it for any of the recent security stability fixes and obviously not to Yosemite. It has Safari 7.0.1 and it will go to every http address I care to choose. So I copied the keychain (login.keychain) and replaced the same file in Yosemite keychain with the one from Mavericks. I can use Safari like this just as before but as before it will not work with various http sites. So it is not they keychain, my broadband, just the Yosemite 10.10.3 and I suspect it is something to do with the security fixes of the last month or so.

Ok so having spent all day on this since 8am this morning when I awoke thinking about it. I have discovered the problem. Apple in it's latest 10.10.3 update has omitted the Geotrust/Equifax Secure Certificate Authority .pem file.

Go to https://www.geotrust.com /resources/root-certificates and download the Equifax.pem file - right click and select save as to your downloads folder.

Add the certificate by double clicking it which will load Keyring utility, when prompted add Administrator name and password, you may need to select System and click add, when asked if you want to trust the certificate signed by Equinox from now on, click Always Trust, enter password to confirm and close the app. Close and re-open the browser and all is good. Thanks Apple!!!
