Macbook Air making whirring noise and running slow

Hi there,

My Macbook air is making this odd whirring noise (presumably from the fan) since yesterday evening. It is not loud but I never heard it making this kind of noise before. I also noticed that it is quite laggy when I type, opening apps, switching between apps, etc. I decided to factory reset the macbook but the problem still persists. Any ideas of what it could be and how to fix it? I'm thinking of bringing it to the Apple store as a last resort only.

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), Macbook air 2013 model

System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.
