I tried to replace the screen on my ipad 4 but now I have broken the retaining clip that holds the LCD ribbon in place. Do you if apple store would repair this even though I have not stuck the screen back on

Any warranty you had would have been voided by you trying to repair the iPad yourself but Apple will repair/replace your device for a fee:

Set up an appointment with a Genius Bar and they'll go over your options.
I'm not positive but once you attempted to repair your iPad you not only voided your warranty but you also voided the ability to have your iPad replaced for the out of warranty fee. The only way to know for sure though is to contact Apple.
