Q: Show reference file in Finder

In iPhoto I was able to right-click on single picture or even on an event to show the images in Finder.

Now I see this option in the File menu of Photos, but it's greyed out. Why?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008), OS X Yosemite (10.10), 2.4 GHz, 8 GB RAM

You can only reveal original image files in the Finder, that have been imported as referenced . Files stored inside the Photos Library cannot be revealed in the Finder.

    See this Help Page:   https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/pht1ed9b966d

Store imported files outside the Photos library

    • Choose Photos > Preferences, then click General.
    • Deselect the “Copy items to the Photos library” checkbox. Now, when you import photos or video, Photos leaves the files in their original location and accesses them as referenced files.

Copy referenced files into a Photos library

You can copy referenced files into your photo library so they’re easier to back up and are automatically included in your iCloud Photo Library.

    • Select the files that you want to move into the photo library.
    • Choose File > Consolidate.
    • Click Copy.

Sorry I don't understand the difference.

In iPhoto I used to import a picture file from, say, the desktop, that file was imported in the library, which means it was copied inside the Finder folder of my iPhoto library. Then, in iPhoto I could reveal that photo in Finder, which means iPhoto would have opened that Finder folder where the original picture was copied when I imported it.

How can I do that now with the photos which are in my Library and that comes from iPhoto?

Edit: all my photos are in the Photos Library, since they come from my iPhoto Library, where I used to "import photos in the Library" when I added them to iPhoto

That is not supported any longer.  The originals of photos you imported to the library (the safer and recommended way to do it) cannot be revealed in the Finder.

Continue to use iPhoto, if you need the features, that are currently  missing from Photos, like geotagging photos, batch changing, reveal in Finder, star ratings, ...

If you want to access the original file, you are supposed to export a copy using File > Export Kind Original.

thanks. I just reopened iPhoto and I feel more relaxed. What a downgrade they did... I do want to give a name to my albums or events, and to keep them shown in chronological order, in Photos it seems to be possible to do just one of these two things at once. I do want to be able to open the exact picture shown in iPhoto in Finder. You're naming also other features which are missing in this "upgrade", I think I don't even want to know the entire list...

Just, there are some issues I could have continuing to use and import photos in iPhoto, apart from the annoying alert which asks me if I want to open Photos or iPhoto?

, apart from the annoying alert which asks me if I want to open Photos or iPhoto?

This alert should only be shown once. After that the library should be back to normal, once you opened it in iPhoto.

I have not noticed any problems. iPhoto is working well on Yosemite 10.10.3.

I can even open it concurrently to Photos.
