I have image capture on my mac so i plug in my camera image capture opens, i import pictures straight to my pictures folder.
I have a friend who has just got the same computer both running Yosemite and his opens photos and loads all his images there. How can i change his to upload his pictures with image capture like mine and send them straight to his Pictures folder.

Your friend has to set the cam and/or Image Capture settings to have the photos go where he/she wants.
Set preferences to launch Image Capture.

When i open photos i do no have the box come up at the side as your image shows

If you can't find it how do you know it's on your Mac? 😕
The Image Capture app is found inside the Applications folder. If it is not there, check inside the Utilities folder.
Enable Show Sidebar in the View menu, then connect your device.
You can also go to preferences in iPhoto and choose Image Capture as the default app for connecting camera.
