Why does Mail sometimes ask for passwords that are saved

Lately Mail 7.3 in OS 10.9.5 has been asking for passwords after starting and retrieving mail even though those passwords are saved. I hit cancel and quit then restart Mail with no further problems. Is this a common problem? What should I do?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), 10.8.5

Greetings MRBarrett27,

After reviewing your post, it sounds like Mail is asking for a password you had already saved. I would recommend that you read this article, Keychain Access is used to store account names and passwords for applications.

Keychain Access: If you have a problem with keychains

  1. Choose Keychain Access > Keychain First Aid.

  2. Enter your user name and password.

  3. Select Verify, then click Start.

    Any problems found are displayed.

  4. If there are problems, select Repair, then click Start.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Take care,
