i seem to have lost several of my photos in my iPhone 6 plus. they are grayed out but retain location information. how do i retrieve the photos?

At one time my photos were visible on my iPhone 6 plus but for whatever reason the images are gone. The photos retain location information and individual identity information. Does anyone have information that will make the photos return. Unfortunately I did not save the photos to my Mac Pro. I did not save the photos to the cloud.
