i updated itunes from app store and now my mac book pro 15" will not boot up it gets hung up on disk utillities???

i updated itunes from app store and now my mac book pro 15" will not boot up it gets hung up on disk utillities??? When i try and reinstall the mavericks osx it now says there isnt enough space??? Says i need another 2.45 gigs but how can i free up space when it wont fully boot up at startup???

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Try a safe boot:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

If successful, empty trash and delete or transfer data off of the HDD.
